Best Restaurants in Maastricht with Children (with outdoor playgrounds)

One of the great things about Maastricht is the food. The rest of the Netherlands is not known for its culinary delights, but it all changes when you come to the South of Limburg. Having children inevitably affects your restaurant-going habits. The good news is that there are some great restaurants in Maastricht that you can visit with your children, while enjoying the famous Bourgondisch lifestyle.

I find it important to expose my children to real life-experiences. I bring them along wherever I go. That’s how they learn about the world and the ‘rules’ of our society one step at a time. I have realistic expectations of them. Sitting still for hours in an overwhelming surrounding is not going to happen. Visiting restaurants with outdoor playgrounds is a great compromise for us. I’m grateful that there are so many good restaurants in Maastricht where the children can play happily while mom and dad can relax.

You can see this as an ever-expanding list of nice restaurants to visit in Maastricht with children. This time the focus is on restaurants with an outdoor playground. We frequently visit these places and I am happy to recommend them for other parents.

Restrobar Mama’s

Nestled in the heart of the Groene Loper area, behind the central station, this restaurant is designed to bring both young and old together. Restrobar Mama’s is a great option if you are looking for a child-friendly restaurant with a specious playground somewhat close to the center of Maastricht. Mama’s offers weekly activities like Pizza Making workshops and dedicated play afternoons for kids every Wednesday.

You can check their current events here.

The diverse food and drink selection at Mama’s offers something for everyone. We love their efficient order and payment system, facilitated by QR codes on the terrace.

Children love the Klimrex on the playground. Nice welcoming and international vibes.

Villa Kanjel

Villa Kanjel is situated on the edge of Maastricht along the Groene Loper just behind Maastricht Noord station. If your children enjoy climbing constructions, this is your place to be.

Their selection of food and drinks is basic – you can check out their menu here – but good and their playgrounds are huge! When I say huge, I mean HUGE. Climbing construction after climbing construction in a beautiful green surrounding. It is worth exploring the neighboring Villa Park and forest as well.

If you’re in search of a child-friendly restaurant with an enormous outdoor playground in Maastricht, Villa Kanjel is a must-visit. Trust me, it’s worth the journey!

Dwaze Herder

If you are looking for an all-in one entertainment spot for children in Maastricht, the Dwaze Herder is your place too be. This child-friendly restaurant, nestled just on the outskirts of Maastricht, is a true all-rounder. The Dwaze Herder has a good selection of food and drinks with a lovely and spacious restaurant area. Their outdoor playground is huge and includes a little farm with kangaroos, peacocks, etc. They even offer pony rides. There is a smaller indoor playground in a separate area that is popular for children’s parties. Recently their already impressive selection of activities was extended with an Ibiza-style swimming pool/lounge area.

You can check out their website here to see all the things this place offers.

Buitengoed Slavante

Slavante holds a special place in our hearts. We loved this place long before we became parents. We are happy that we can enjoy this special restaurant of Maastricht now together with our children.

We love Slavante for its delicious food – their menu is featuring many local specialities – and the view from their terrace is breathtaking. Castle Lichtenberg is a short walk from here.

The outdoor playground of the restaurant is not huge, but it is sufficient for children in a beautiful natural surrounding like this.

Pro-tip: Combine your visit with a boat trip from the center of Maastricht. Look for the boat trips with cave visit to make sure that your boat will surely stop here. The cave visit is also great for rainy days.

If you just want to relax at Slavante and walk a bit in the area, you can get a ticket without the cave visit for a Tour on the Maas. The boats are returning back to Maastricht every hour (20 minute past the hour). For more info check the website of the local sightseeing boats of Maastricht here.

We recently had a really lovely trip to Slavante by boat. You can check out our instagram report on it here.

Are you missing one of your favorites on the list? Do you agree with this selection? Let us know!

Much love,

Orsi
